The paper analyzes the position of the Muslim population in western Serbia on the eve of the Second World War on the basis of archival material of the Imamate of the Višegrad jamaat from the period 1937–1941. The sources used include official reports sent to the Ulema-Majlis and the Waqf Directorate in Sarajevo, which contain data on the demographic structure, religious life, education, social position, and identity processes of Muslims in the Užice jamaat and surrounding places.

The analysis shows that Muslims in Serbia were few in number, spatially dispersed, socially marginalized, and institutionally neglected, but that on the eve of the war there were also recorded attempts to renew religious consciousness and preserve identity. This material represents a valuable source for the study of minority Muslim communities outside Bosnia and Herzegovina in interwar Yugoslavia.
