Abstract

In September 2025, 55 years have passed since the founding of the Islamic informational newspaper Preporod. The first issue of this paper was published in Sarajevo on 15 September 1970, which corresponds to the 14th of Rajab 1390 in the Hijri calendar. From its initial edition of only twelve pages, Preporod has, over the decades, developed into a respected printed media outlet in Bosnia and Herzegovina, today recognizable for its scope of more than sixty pages and its status as a strong media symbol of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In addition to its primary informational function, through news, commentaries, analyses, translations, and interviews, Preporod also had a significantly broader social reach during the period of socialist Yugoslavia. The newspaper encouraged and articulated jamaat initiatives which, over time, grew into an important factor in social processes and changes. Such a role did not go unnoticed by the state structures of the time, which sought to exert influence on the editorial guidelines of the paper.

After the breakup of Yugoslavia, Preporod was profiled as a key media outlet of the Islamic Community in Bosnia and Herzegovina, maintaining continuity of publication on a biweekly basis. The text marking the 55th anniversary identifies the key areas covered by Preporod and examines its place and significance in the contemporary media environment of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
