At the beginning of September, a professional consultation on mekteb and mekteb instruction was held in Sarajevo. It was an opportunity for experts to address imams, chief imams, and muftis, as well as representatives of the Riyaset and the Religious Affairs Administration responsible for mekteb, and to emphasize, through their knowledge, skills, teachings, and recommendations, the significant role of the mekteb in the upbringing and maturation of each child into a unique personality. In addition to discussing the fundamental values of akhlaq and ibadah acquired through the mekteb, and the role of teachers, imams, and muallims in nurturing spiritually strong and aware members of the community, this year’s focus was also on the inclusion of children with special needs in mekteb instruction. Attention was given to how, through the strong power of words and effective communication, the mekteb years can be made one of the most important periods in a child’s development.
