THE STATE OF MUSLIM SCHOOLS IN BOSNIA- HERZEGOVINA AT THE BEGINNING OF 1882/1883 SCHOOL YEAR

Abstract

The author of this article asserts that all details on the stateof Muslim schools in Bosnia-Herzegovina during the time of Austro-Hungarian rule have not yet been collected. Using thecode under which data from the B-H State Government census on Muslim schools, organized at the beginning of 1882/1883 school years, are kept, the author was able to find surveys from that census in the B-H Archive and transcribe the original data. The author prepared a detailed tabular review of the Muslim school system in B-H urban areas, districts and counties duringthat school year. There were 630 elementary religious schools(sebyan maktab) with total of 27,679 pupils and 701 teachers,and 42 religious junior high schools (madrasah) in whole of B-H. The article also presents B-H State Government data collectedat the beginning of the Austro-Hungarian rule. He found thefollowing: 449 elementary religious schools with total of 23, 308pupils and 535 teachers, and 18 religious junior high schools.
