“TACHRIJ AND THE ANALYSIS OF THE HADITH: “ALLAH HAS CREATED ADEM, A.S., IN HIS OWN (OWN?) IMMAGE”

Abstract

The Qur’an and the Sunnah have an essential role in the lives of all Muslims. Striving of the faithful to live their lives in accordance with ayahs of the Qur’an or the text of Suunah is worthy of admiration. However, the text of the Hadith is often a subject of disputes or differences in regard to the authenticity of certain Hadith or the interpretation of the meaning of the text of the Hadith. Thus the Hadith stating: “Allah has created Adam in His (own?) image” is one Hadith that can be taken as an example in this sense, since its authenticity, as well as its text, has been a subject of dispute in every age so far. When we consider the criticism of the text in question, we see that the main reason for disputes is the fact that the interpretation of this Hadith had been taken out of its context. This Hadith is discussed here as an exemplary case of a Hadith that meets all the technical requirements of the criteria of authenticity, yet it is a subject of disputes.
