The basic orientation of this article is addressing the issue of the maktab class and teaching the maktab class with an emphasis on the impact of the maktab class on the moral orientation of its students and the youth in general. It is a well-established fact that teaching the maktab class has a long history in Bosnia and Herzegovina, dating to the time before the fall of Bosnia under the Ottoman Empire. The Maktab class has endured various phases throughout the region's turbulent history. Still, it always existed and played, sometimes more, sometimes less significant role in the educational and upbringing process.  The article identifies certain dilemmas regarding the maktab class. It attempts to point out the fact that the maktab class always had primarily an upbringing role, followed by an educational role in the community. We tried to show that the maktab has the potential to contribute to the moral formation of the children through the authority of muallims as a central figure in the maktab class, despite all the challenges brought about by contemporary developments. The article presents a theoretical analysis of the history of the maktab class and its role in defining a moral identity, and is reinforced by the decades-old experience of the author in teaching the maktab class.
