This paper addresses the issue of the rationality and purposefulness of following the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Adherence to his path and example represents a fundamental principle of Islamic life and guides a person toward the straight path. Such adherence is not blind imitation, but is based on a rational understanding of the purpose and wisdom underlying his actions, words, and recommendations. The rationality of this following is manifested in the fact that the Prophet (peace be upon him), through his life and guidance, leads believers through moral, spiritual, and practical aspects of life, encouraging the development of awareness, understanding, and sound judgment. The purposefulness of following the Prophet (peace be upon him) is reflected in directing human beings toward the realization of goals prescribed by Allah—doing good, avoiding evil, and attaining divine mercy. Observance of the Sunnah is not merely ritualistic or formal; rather, it yields practical, moral, and social benefits that contribute to the harmony of both the individual and the community. The rationality and purposefulness of following the Prophet (peace be upon him) connect spiritual development with rational understanding of the world, creating a balance between faith, reason, and action, and guiding believers toward success in this life and the hereafter. The principle of rationality and purposefulness is particularly emphasized in the formulation of legal rulings, as the Almighty frequently explains and clarifies the status, actions, and consequences of human deeds in an intelligible manner.
