Ḥadīth represents one of the fundamental sources of Islamic law; however, variations in the degree to which it is used as legal and theological evidence give rise to methodological and epistemological dilemmas, particularly in the field of aqīdah (creed). This study examines the status of āḥād ḥadīth within Islamic methodologies of proof, with a focus on differences in approach among the major classical schools. As the most frequently transmitted category of ḥadīth, āḥād has also generated the greatest debate due to its speculative nature. The paper connects the positions of various schools with the concepts of certainty and probability regarding reliability, and it compares āḥād ḥadīth with the Qur’an, and demonstrates how this relationship is reflected in matters of Islamic creed and legal rulings. A model for classifying degrees of probabilistic reliability is also presented, contributing to a more precise and balanced understanding of this subject.
