This paper analyses the role of the mekteb as a fundamental institution of Islamic religious upbringing and education in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is not only a place for teaching the Qur’an and providing basic Islamic knowledge, but also a key guardian of the spiritual, cultural, and national identity of Bosniaks. The continuity of mekteb instruction is presented, emphasizing the role of the mekteb in preserving faith, language, and tradition, despite political pressures and marginalization efforts. Special attention is given to the geographical distribution of mektebs. The overview includes, in addition to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the diaspora and regions with minority Bosniak communities, where this institution plays a fundamental role in preserving identity. The paper also examines the role of the mekteb in early socialization of children, the acquisition of religious and moral values, and its contribution to personality formation and the sense of belonging to the community. The study further emphasizes the openness of Bosnian-Herzegovinian society toward other religious and cultural communities, which the mekteb promotes by teaching ethical and universal values. The conclusion confirms that the mekteb is an indispensable institution for religious education and for preserving the Islamic identity and cultural distinctiveness of Bosniaks.
