The title of this interview is a phrase that Prof. Dr. Amr Ryad addressed to doctoral students, as part of the most important advice from those who have already passed that path. Amr Ryad (also written as Umar in some cases) is the head of the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. He graduated from Al-Azhar and completed his master’s and doctoral studies at the University of Leiden.
In this interview, he speaks about the journey of a boy from a small Egyptian village in the delta to a renowned professor at prestigious world universities. His “beautiful story” includes hidden archives; the importance of the right people at the right time; what it means to be a teacher who does not suppress but widen horizons; intellectual humility; and students as the measure of one’s own success.
