Abstract

The author examines positive cognitive and affective results of the class discussions on the students. She finds great challenges of this class method and analyses possible reasons for its negligible application in the practice. In the main part of the article, the author examines actions of the teachers that motivate students in class discussions and some specific techniques achieving this manifold useful goal. It also examines different backgrounds and indirect influences which are essential for students’ (lack of) participation in the class discussion. One reaches a conclusion that there is a need to encourage students’ participation in the discussion taking into consideration complexity of the factors enfolding it.
