Bosniaks constitute a unique example of a European nation that, over the course of nearly the last two centuries, has shaped the expression of its Islamic faith and its Muslim religious tradition, culture, and civilization in accordance with modern European social concepts and the principles of the secular state. This process of developing a model of coexistence between the Islamic faith and Muslim religious tradition, culture, and civilization, on the one hand, and European secularism, on the other, evolved gradually and was not without its challenges. This essay examines the adaptation of Bosniak religious and social life to the European concepts of the secular state and secular society, as well as to the concepts of the separation of religion and state, freedom of conscience, and the freedom to choose one's religion or non-religion. The essay also explores the Bosniaks' long-standing endeavour to cultivate a form of Muslim religious, cultural, and social life that is inclusive and, as it has often been described, European.
