Abstract

UDK 28-254

The theme of this article is a section of the Qur’anic ayah 4:34, wherein the wa-ḍribūhunna is given. We here discuss, on the bases of some European and Western translations of the Qur’an, different approaches to the translation and interpretation of the term wa-ḍribūhunna. Does it mean „beat them“, „strike them“, „hit them“, „ strike them, lightly“, „punish them“, „chastise them“, or does it mean: „teach them“, „give them nice examples“ and so on? This article also presents some often used quotations from classical commentaries of the Qur’an of this ayah 4:34, particularly of the expression wa-ḍribūhunna.
