WHO WERE THE TEACHERS IN MUSLIM ELEMENTARY AND NATIONAL TWO YEAR COLLEGE FOR GIRLS IN SARAJEVO (1894 - 1918)

Abstract

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the education of the girls and particularly Muslim girls was not something that was subject of great concern. The first school for Muslim girls was opened in 1894 in Sarajevo, under name Muslim Elementary School in which, in addition to Arabic alphabet and Islamic religious instruction, the girls were also taught Latin alphabet and secular subjects (reading, calculus, history and geography). By the decision of the National Government for Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1897, the school became Muslim National Primary School for Girls in Sarajevo (four year program). In 1901 the program was extended for three more years, as an extended three year course with the purpose of educating Muslim girls to become teachers in the lower Muslim primary schools. This course for further education of the Muslim girls opened in 1901 by the decision of the National Government, was turned in 1913 into Muslim Two Year College for Girls (four year program), which further tied with the four year primary school. It operated all through 1926. The school was opened and financed by National Government for Bosnia and Herzegovina that also provided its primary teachers and teachers. The religious instructor was appointed by Islamic religious community and paid by National Government. From 1894 to 1918, a total of 18 primary teachers and teachers as well as three imams who gave Islamic instruction taught at the Muslim Elementary and Two Year College for Girls in Sarajevo. This work also includes short biographical data on 14 primary teachers and teachers and two imams.
