Abstract

This text gives a review of the most important facts relating to the life of Annemarie Schimmell and includes her most significant works. The author placed an emphasis on her role in promoting Islamic studies in Europe and in the West and particularly on the role she had in the translations of the great works of Islam into the Western languages. The author calls her a diva of Islamic -oriental studies in Europe and believes her to be perhaps the greatest woman authority on Islam in the West. Her death in 2003 meant a great loss for Islamic studies in Europe and particularly in Germany.
